Episode 11 Show Notes. On the Biology of Belief

The Biology of Belief by Dr. Bruce LiptonDo your genes control your health? Do your beliefs have any impact on your wellness?

In this episode, I focus on these questions through discussion of Dr. Bruce Lipton’s book, The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter & Miracles.

It can be difficult to challenge the accepted paradigms around us, including the paradigms of genetic determinism and mind-body duality. When we can integrate an understanding of how these paradigms are actually beliefs (and ones that are being overturned), it gives us more room to act in support of our own wellbeing. What we believe affects what we do at a very basic level.

Though conventional wisdom says that the brain of the cell is the nucleus, Dr. Lipton contends instead that it’s the membrane, that in fact it is environmental signals that determine what genes are turned on or off. I explain how this is the case, hopefully in terms that any non-scientist can understand (since I’m one myself)!

The environmental signals that turn on or off genes include energy, and that energy includes thoughts and beliefs. Mind and matter are deeply entangled. Since the subconscious mind is far more powerful than the conscious mind (where we might decide to try to think positively), it is the subconscious beliefs and perceptions that we learned, often when very young, that have the greatest impact to create health or to create illness.

What I talk about

  • Why it’s important to understand the biology of belief
  • The evidence against genes as a sole determinant for most illness
  • How the membrane has replaced the nucleus as the “brain” of the cell
  • How signals from the environment turn on and off genes
  • What E=MC2 means, really
  • How thought affects the body
  • The role of the subconscious in forming our perceptions
  • How we can be “downloaded” with inaccurate beliefs
  • The power of the placebo and nocebo effects
  • Why and how to strive for a growth state over a protective state

Notable Quotes

“Your beliefs act like filters on a camera, changing how you see the world. And your biology adapts to those beliefs. When we truly recognize that our beliefs are that powerful, we hold the key to freedom. While we cannot readily change the codes of our genetic blueprints, we can change our minds.”
